I will be shooting a short film opening
Duration: 6 - 8 minutes
Characters:
Ben - Oliver Weston
Martha (Dog)
Ben's mum - Jennifer Weston (voice in background)
Genre: Family Drama
Location: My house & Blean Woods
Target Audience: Children aged 8 and above & Young teenagers
- Also a good family film
The film opening is fairly dark at the start, but everything would be resolved at the end of the film in which I obviously do not film as I am only filming an opening. It would be a happy ending meaning it is fit for families and children above 8 years old.
Medium: 1080p HDV
My movie opening will appear on television as well as online e.g. youtube (like a movie trailer) and will appear in cinemas.
My film will be classed as PG, Parental guidance.

This is the bbfc website which enabled me to choose what the film should be classed under.
'PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means a film is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Parents should consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children.'
My opening to the film contains a scene which shows drugs and alcohol in which may be unsuitable for young children. This should not unsettle the child around eight or older but is advised that a parent should watch with the child. Apart from this scene, there are no particularly unsuitable scenes for children.
Ben is a 12 year old boy who has trouble at home with his family who are not very nice. They do not take care of him well and do not really care about him. The film will open with Ben in bed and a voice shouting in the background telling him to wake up and let the dog outside and tidy the kitchen. Ben goes downstairs and into the kitchen, he lets the dog out and then walks into the kitchen to see how messy it is, with dirty dishes everywhere, pills laying on the table, alcohol in the sink. Suddenly Ben's mum is shouting in the background telling him that Martha got mud all over the floor in the hallway. She shouts at Ben and calls him a waste of space etc and to tidy it up. This was the last straw for Ben and he drops the dishes, storms upstairs and into his room, he starts packing his rucksack with clothes etc, goes downstairs packs a loaf of bread and a water bottle. Grabs the dogs lead and the dog and leaves the house slamming the door. Ben and the dog are filmed walking into the woods. Ben is angry and knows that he never wants to return again. Once in the woods, he finds a place to sit down and sort himself out. He empties his backpack and realises there is nothing in there that he really needs to live. Music starts to play at this point and Ben drops his backpack, takes the dog off the lead, looks into the camera and starts running with the dog running beside him. He starts to smile as he realises he is free. Right at the end, boots are walking towards the backpack that Ben leaves behind, and the finishing scene is off this mysterious person going through things that are in the bag until he finds Ben's passport. This leaves the audience with a cliffhanger and they will want to find out more. This is a successful result for a film opening where the audience want to see what happens next.
Key Scenes:
1) The scene where the camera focuses on alcohol laying around, dirty dishes and pills in the kitchen. This makes the audience realise that Ben's home life is not ideal.
2) Ben leaving the house. This lets the audience know that Ben is not happy at home, and that the main subject of this film is Ben running away.
3) Ben leaving his backpack behind and running with the dog away from his home. This shows the audience firstly, that Ben has had enough of home life and that the story will be about him leaving home and secondly by having a shot of the backpack on its own in the woods will add suspicion and the audience will know this may lead to bad news.
4) The mysterious person at the end going through Ben's backpack. The audience will know that this will have significant importance throughout the film and that Ben is not safe.
